With Credit Card Offers and Applications Read the Fine Print

by David Wilson on April 4, 2008

When people look over credit card applications many do not take the time to read the fine print. However the fine print is important to read, as it contains very important information. Credit card companies know that people do not read the fine print, which can boost the bottom line of the companies. There are some things you should look for when reading the fine print of credit card application. Here are some of the things you should look out for.

* The Variable Rate - Many credit card offers and applications offer low interest rates. But you should look into how the rates can change and if there is an expiration date for the introductory period. Many people do not know this, as over 50% of Americans carry a balance that goes past the promotion period. You have to make sure you pay your credit card bills on time, because if you make a late payment many creditors will raise the interest rate on your card.

* Fees - Credit cards have many fees, many of which are hidden in the fine print. Some examples of these fees are late fees, annual fees, and cash advance fees. You need to read the fine print carefully so you know what fees are associated with the card you may apply for.

* Interest Rate Calculation - Many credit card companies use the method of “average billing cycle.” However there are credit card companies that will use the “double billing cycle” method. With this method the due date on your credit card statement is the minimum payment amount. You need to find out how the interest rate is calculated, so you will not get caught paying more in interest when paying your credit card bills.

* Grace Period - The grace period for credit card is the time that you have to pay off the balance on your credit card without having to pay interest. You have to know the grace period and keep checking it because credit card companies can change it at any time.

It is very important that you read over credit card applications and offers, especially the fine print. No matter how attractive the offer is you have to make sure you know everything about the offer or it may cost you money in fees and interest rate changes. If you are not sure or do not understand anything about the offer or application contact the credit card company and ask them to fully explain it to you.
